What we find, by neighbourhood
The downtown core and the older Allandale streets are pre-war: 60 amp fused services, knob-and-tube surviving above later renovations, and ungrounded two-wire branch circuits behind three-prong outlets someone swapped in during the 1990s. Letitia Heights and Codrington are the 1950s and early 60s — undersized panels, no ground at the receptacles, and original 60 amp services that were adequate for the house as built and are not adequate for it now.
Sunnidale and Grove East are the aluminum-wiring belt. Barrie built hard through the 1966–1978 window when solid aluminum branch wiring was standard, and those homes are where the pigtailing work is. Painswick and Holly are 1985–2000, which means Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok panels reaching the end of a life they were never that good at in the first place.
Ardagh Bluffs and Innis-Shore are the newest, and their electrical is fine — right up until someone adds an EV charger, a hot tub, or a heat pump to a 100 amp service and discovers the load calculation does not work.
The Kempenfelt Bay outage pattern
Wind coming across the bay and ice loading in December put trees into lines every winter, and the older tree-lined streets near the waterfront lose power more often than the newer subdivisions with underground distribution. If you are on an overhead service in the downtown or Allandale area, backup power is a more reasonable investment here than a generic recommendation would suggest.
