Emergency callout

24/7 Emergency Electrician in Barrie

Burning smells, dead circuits, sparking outlets, storm damage. Live phone, not an answering service.

Typical cost
$180 first hour
What that covers
After-hours callout, diagnosis included

Some electrical faults can wait for a scheduled visit. These cannot. If you are reading this while smelling something burning, stop reading and call.

Call immediately if you have

  • A burning or fishy plastic smell near an outlet, switch, or the panel. That smell is overheating thermoset plastic and it precedes fire.
  • Scorch marks, discolouration, or heat you can feel through a cover plate.
  • Sparking or arcing from an outlet or fixture — a small snap when unplugging is normal, sustained arcing is not.
  • A breaker that trips again immediately after reset. That is a live fault, not a nuisance trip. Leave it off.
  • Loss of power to part of the house while the rest is fine, especially with lights running unusually bright or dim. That pattern suggests a lost neutral, which will destroy electronics.
  • A service mast pulled loose from the wall, or a downed service conductor after a storm.
  • Any electrical equipment that has been wet — basement flooding around a panel or a submerged sump circuit.

What to do before we arrive

If you can safely reach the panel and you know which breaker feeds the affected area, switch it off. If you cannot identify it or the panel itself is the problem, do not open the panel — kill the main if it is safe to reach, and wait outside. For a downed service conductor, stay well back and call Alectra Utilities first; anything on the utility side of the meter is theirs, not ours, and we will tell you so rather than bill you for the trip.

Lost neutral — the one people misread

An open neutral on a split-phase service is the fault most often mistaken for something harmless. The symptom is strange: some lights burn very bright, others go dim, and the pattern shifts as appliances turn on. What is happening is that the two 120V legs are no longer balanced against a solid neutral, so voltage divides across whatever is plugged in. It will run 180 volts through electronics rated for 120. It is also a common outcome of a corroded overhead service in an older Barrie neighbourhood.

After-hours rates

WindowFirst hourAdditional
Weekdays 7am–7pm$140$110/hr
Evenings and Saturdays$180$140/hr
Overnight, Sundays, statutory holidays$240$170/hr

The first hour includes diagnosis. If the fix is a five-minute repair we say so and bill the hour, not a fabricated job. If the fault needs a return visit with parts, the callout fee comes off the repair quote.

FAQ

Emergency callout — common questions

How fast can you get to me in Barrie?

Within the city, typically 45 to 90 minutes for a genuine emergency. Innisfil, Oro-Medonte and Springwater add roughly 20 minutes. We tell you an honest window on the phone rather than saying "on our way" and leaving you waiting.

Is a tripping breaker an emergency?

It depends on the reset. A breaker that trips once, resets, and holds is usually an overloaded circuit — annoying, not urgent. A breaker that trips instantly every time you reset it is protecting you from a short circuit or ground fault. Leave it off and call.

The power is out on my whole street. Do I call you?

No — call Alectra Utilities. If the outage stops at your property line, or you have partial power, that is on your side of the meter and that is ours.

Do you charge just to come out and look?

The first hour is charged and includes full diagnosis and a written explanation of the fault. We would rather quote that clearly than advertise a free visit and price it back into the repair.

Describe the problem over the phone. We can usually tell you whether it needs a truck today or can wait for a scheduled visit — and roughly what it costs — before anyone books anything.
