A panel upgrade is the single most common electrical job in Barrie, and it is almost never optional by the time someone calls about it. Either the insurer has flagged the panel, the service is too small for what the house now runs, or a breaker has started tripping under normal load. All three end at the same place: a new panel, usually a new service mast and meter base with it, and a permit through the Electrical Safety Authority.
When 100 amps stops being enough
A 1970s Barrie house on 100 amp service was designed around a gas furnace, a gas range, and one television. It was never sized for a heat pump, an induction range, a hot tub, and a Level 2 EV charger. The calculation that matters is CEC Section 8, and it fails faster than people expect — a single 40 amp EV charger plus a heat pump will consume most of the headroom on a 100 amp service in a house with electric water heating.
The tell most homeowners notice first is lights dimming when a large motor starts — the furnace blower, the well pump, the air conditioner on the first hot day of June. That is voltage drop under inrush, and it means the service is working near its limit.
Panels we replace on sight
- Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok — extremely common in Barrie subdivisions built 1970–1990. The breakers have a documented failure-to-trip history and most Ontario insurers now ask about them by name.
- Zinsco / Sylvania — less common here but present in some 1970s builds. Bus bar corrosion causes breakers to stay energised after they appear to trip.
- Fuse panels — 60 amp fused services still exist in Allandale and the older downtown streets. Insurance is difficult to place and often conditional on replacement.
- Any panel with double-tapped breakers, missing knockouts, or evidence of heat at the bus.
What the job actually involves
A service upgrade is not just swapping the box. On a typical Barrie detached home with an overhead service, the work is: pull the ESA permit, coordinate a disconnect with Alectra Utilities, replace the mast and weatherhead, replace the meter base, install the new panel, re-terminate every branch circuit, drive a new ground rod and bond to the water service, then get the ESA inspection and the utility reconnect. Power is off for most of a day.
Underground services in the newer Barrie subdivisions — Ardagh Bluffs, Innis-Shore, Holly — are usually simpler, because there is no mast to replace. Those jobs land at the lower end of the range.

Anyone quoting a 200 amp service upgrade at under $1,500 in this market is either not pulling a permit or has not seen the mast. Both are problems that surface later, usually at the point of sale.

Panel upgrades — common questions
Do I need an ESA permit for a panel upgrade in Barrie?
Yes, without exception. A service or panel change requires a notification to the Electrical Safety Authority and an inspection. The permit is filed by the licensed contractor, not the homeowner, and the inspection record follows the property — it is what a buyer's lawyer asks for later.
How long is the power off?
Plan for six to eight hours on a straightforward upgrade. Alectra schedules the disconnect and reconnect, so the day is partly outside our control. We book them for the same morning and aim to have you back on by late afternoon.
Will my insurer actually require this?
If you have a Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok panel or a 60 amp fused service, increasingly yes. Several Ontario insurers now decline or surcharge both. We can provide the ESA inspection certificate directly to your broker once the work passes.
Can I upgrade to 200 amps if I have underground service?
Usually yes, and it is generally the easier job. The existing underground conductor is often already rated for it, so the work is limited to the meter base and panel. We confirm the conductor size before quoting.
