Here is a question that decides your install date, and almost nobody asks it until the day is already booked wrong: who distributes electricity to your address?
If a job involves replacing the mast, the meter base or the panel, the service conductors have to be de-energised at the source. You cannot do that from inside the house, because the incoming service stays live regardless of what you switch off at the main. Only the distribution utility can pull it, and their schedule sets the day.
Around Barrie that is three different organisations depending on where you live.
Who covers what
| Where | Distributor |
|---|---|
| City of Barrie | Alectra Utilities |
| Innisfil: Alcona, Stroud, Lefroy, Gilford | InnPower |
| Oro-Medonte, Springwater, Midhurst and the rural townships | Hydro One |
A useful thing to know: the company that distributes your electricity is not necessarily the one whose name is on the retail portion of your bill. The distributor is the one that owns the poles and the meter, and it is the distributor that matters here. If you are not sure, the bill names them.
Why this trips people up
Barrie has grown outward across boundaries that do not follow the way people describe where they live. Someone in Stroud will say they live “just outside Barrie”, but Stroud is InnPower, not Alectra, and that is a different phone call with a different lead time. Midhurst is minutes from the north end of the city and is Hydro One.
Nothing about the electrical work changes. What changes is who has to show up to pull the service, and how far ahead they need to be asked.
What this means for scheduling
The sequence on a service upgrade is:
- Pull the ESA permit.
- Book the disconnect and reconnect with the correct distributor.
- Do the work on the day they give you, with the power off for most of it.
- ESA inspects.
- The utility reconnects.
Steps 2 and 5 are the ones outside anybody’s control. That is why a quote that promises a specific date before the utility has been contacted is not a promise anyone can keep. A disconnect day should start in the morning, because the reconnect has to happen the same day, and a late start is what turns a one-day job into a night without power.
The practical advice
When you call anyone about a service upgrade, tell them your address early in the conversation, not at the end. It changes the lead time, and a contractor who does not ask which distributor covers you before quoting a date is telling you something about how often they do this work in Simcoe County.
